All creativity can be summarized by the manipulation of Tension and Resolution. Understand that tension is a tool, and it is seminal.
I expect my students to write a lot of songs.
I expect my students to devote meticulous attention to detail. I challenge them to write thirty, (yeah, 3-0), songs per year that are complete, and ready for the marketplace.
Before you declare to the world that you have written a hit, please stop and ask yourself these questions.
Will this creation have relevance for me tomorrow?
What do I wish I could have changed?
Does it convey my truth?
What is the response of your first audience…family, friends, peers? That immediate response is significant.
If I ever get your songs, you can be sure I will ask these questions.
By the way, while we are on the subject of response to your work - songwriting competitions don’t count. They just don’t. Sorry.
